BREAST CANCER – BEYOND PINK OCTOBER

Globally, Pink October is an annual campaign where awareness of breast cancer’s causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are raised. Even though breast cancer is often found in women, some men also get it but it is usually detected in a later stage.

The most common type of breast cancer is Invasive Ductal Carcinoma where the duct cells grow outside the duct and spread to other parts of the breast. In many cases, diagnoses are usually at advanced stages leading to a poor mortality rate. The Ghana Health Service reports that 2,055 out of 4,400 cases of breast cancer reported died from the disease. It is estimated that 1.4 million breast cancer cases are recorded yearly.

In Ghana, breast cancer management has been added to the National Health Insurance Scheme.
