GHANA:  MENTAL DISORDER HIGH IN PREGNANT WOMEN, 50 PERCENT FACE DEPRESSION

The situational report on the mental health of expectant and new mothers shows that 50% of expectant and new mothers experience perinatal depression with about 17% of them considering suicide.  Ghana Health Service conducted the research with its partners and the report was circulated among relevant stakeholders.

The mental well-being of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum can be defined as maternal mental health. Dr. Sefogah, a WHO consultant indicated that there was enough evidence of a high prevalence of maternal mental health disorders which had a negative impact on mothers and infants. He disclosed that due to the lack of adequate health facilities for screening, detection, and effective management, there was a need to include maternal mental health interventions at every level of care. The long-term results of maternal mental health disorders affect the emotional, cognitive, and behavioural development of children.

The situational report has exposed the gaps in the healthcare system and there is a need to create pathways to close the gap including family involvement.
