27 PREGNANT WOMEN DIE IN BAWKU AS A RESULT OF INACCESSIBILITY TO HEALTHCARE DUE TO CONFLICT

The Bawku conflict has resulted in the death of 27 women in the municipality because of their inability to access healthcare services in 2021 and 2022. Majeed Sulemana, a senior health officer at the Ghana Health Service in the Upper East Regional Directorate, stated that Bawku Presbyterian Hospital was the only major referral facility in the district which also serves other places like Pusiga, Gara, Tempane, and Binduri.

He disclosed that some pregnant women died because they did not get access to health facilities while others died as a result of inadequate staff in the hospital which delayed the administration of healthcare. The inadequacy of healthcare workers is further worsened by the inability of some staff living in the disputed communities to come to work for fear of their lives.

Mr. Majeed Suleman pleaded for calm to return so that the health staff can resume work as soon as possible.
